Once the construction is complete, the expansion project will undergo test runs before the commencement of full operations. It will also include upgrades to intersections and sidewalks, and road work. The project development, identification of track and streetcar stop locations, as well as utility relocation works coordination are complete as of mid-2020. The project will extend the streetcar system south from the existing terminus at Union Station towards the University of Missouri, Kansas City (UMKC). In addition, it will provide seamless integration with current and future transit service. The project will significantly enhance safety and mobility for the metropolitan area of Kansas City, while also providing options for future connections to regional transit and increasing economic opportunities.

The estimated investment in the project is $351m, which includes $174m being sought under federal funding.

The project will also receive local funding to support the construction of the extension.Ĭonstruction on the project is expected to begin by late 2021 or early 2022, with completion slated for 2025. The engineering phase involves the execution of engineering and construction contracts.
